The Pearl of Great Price

Eternal Treasures
"The kingdom of heaven is like treasure hidden in a field.  When a man found it, he hid it again, and then in his joy went and sold all he had and bought that field.  Again, the kingdom of heaven is like a merchant looking for fine pearls.  When he found one of great value, he went away and sold everything he had and bought it."  Matthew  13:44-46  NIV

Since time began, women have adorned themselves with all that glitters.  The Bible is filled with references to gold, rubies, and pearls, to name a few.  This morning as I returned jewelry to boxes for safekeeping, I found myself gazing at pieces I'd not worn for years.  It felt like Christmas all over again as I opened box after box, delighted by the treasures inside.

While I admired a strand of smooth pearls; a necklace and earrings of rich wood crafted in Africa; and touched the small bead that rested on a silver leaf pin from my grandmother, my mind was flooded with memories of dear people and special places.

Before I closed the drawer, I picked up a small box, unsure of what I'd find inside.  I discovered a delicate cross on a fine gold chain my parents had given me one Christmas.  I traced the gold filigree lines of the cross with its dark emerald at the center, and my heart stirred with emotion.

The cross necklace reminded me of the precious gift that Christ had paid on the Cross for humanity.  His gift, the Pearl of Great Price, is still precious, still redeeming.  The gift of eternal life is a jewel that touches every area of our lives with hope.

Someday our earthly treasures will pass away.  Settings will fall out, silver will tarnish, stones will chip, satin cords will fade; but the treasure that awaits Believers will last for eternity.  If gifted with a jewel-studded crown in heaven, I'll be honored to set it at the feet of the Master.
